What can I expect from a consultation?

In your interactions with your doula, expect a profound sense of presence and undivided attention. Your voice will be heard and your emotions supported with empathy and understanding.

Your desires and preferences will be respected and honored every step of the way. Amidst the complexities and intricacies of the process, your doula will help navigate the myriad of details, making them more manageable and less overwhelming.

Furthermore, you'll not only receive practical resources but also find a dedicated advocate who is committed to ensuring your comfort and well-being. Beyond these tangible benefits, the journey of exploring death with your doula as a guide can lead to transformative experiences and insights, as death itself becomes a profound teacher in the journey of life.

When is it best to work with a EOL Doula?

No matter your age or circumstance—whether you're preparing for the future, confronting a terminal illness, enjoying the richness of a long life, or supporting a loved one in their final moments—an end-of-life doula offers invaluable support and empathy during challenging times. Given the uniqueness of each situation, it's advisable to reach out whenever questions arise or when the reality of death draws nearer than anticipated.

How is an EOL Doula different than Hospice care?

In certain hospices, doulas are integral members of the care team. As an end-of-life doula, my role differs from traditional medical staff; I'm not tasked with transferring patients or administering medication. Rather, I'm engaged to provide non-medical companionship, comfort, and support to both the patient and their family. Sometimes, families require additional assistance beyond what hospice services provide, and this is where a doula can play a crucial role in filling that gap.

Are EOL Doulas covered by insurance or Medicare?

While we aspire for recognition of the immense value that doula services bring to end-of-life care, it's important to acknowledge that currently, these services aren't covered by insurance. Engaging the support of a doula remains a private pay arrangement. Despite the invaluable assistance and comfort doulas provide to patients and their families during such a sensitive time, the lack of insurance coverage means that individuals or families must bear the financial responsibility for accessing these services. This underscores the ongoing need for advocacy and awareness to ensure that end-of-life doula care becomes more accessible and integrated into healthcare systems in the future.
